The five-member committee, made up of town employees, professionals and volunteers, will begin working on the site before the end of the year, said First Selectman Peter Gorton.
The committee will develop an action plan to guide the town's redevelopment efforts over the next few years. Committee members will receive basic information about the site from a presentation from Paul Fischbach, a consultant for the town's redevelopment agency.
Gorton, who represents the southern part of the town, said he wants to get the redevelopment of the former mall site started by the end of the year. He said it would be "a shame" if the site is left vacant.
"The next step is really to get started and do some preliminary work," he said. "We want to establish what we want to do, and from that we can go to a design firm and get some ideas."
Gorton said his goal is to develop a master plan for the site and then have town staff implement it.
"All I'm looking to do is to get the ball rolling," he said. "This is a great opportunity to develop this vacant site."
Selectmen also decided Tuesday to give the design team for the project at least a year to develop a plan.
"This is a big project," Gorton said. "It's a lot of work. We want to have it in place before we break ground. "
Board member Peter Zadek said he wanted the design team to have a minimum of one year to start their work.
"We want to be sure we have time to incorporate the changes that will come up," he said.
"We want to give them enough time to do their work," he said. "When they do it, it's going to be good."
Gorton said he hopes to make the redeveloping of the site a priority, especially as work proceeds on the new police station.
"We're going to have a lot of people working on the site," he said. "If we make this a priority, we'll get it done sooner rather 0b46394aab
